ABOUT MEZCLAVE

The words Mezcla (mixture) and Clave (Afro-Caribbean instrument and Rhythm) combined give us the meaning and understanding of this seasoned group of musicians and what they are all about. Mezclave was formed 23 years ago, providing an outlet and fulfilling a void for Latin Jazz and Salsa music to be performed in the Midwestern part of the United States.

Edwin Canito was inspired to start this group in 2000 after years of influence from the music of Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Conjunto Libre, and the “FANIA” era of salsa music.

Co-Founded By:

Edwin “Canito” Garcia: Bassist, Producer, Arranger

Angela LeBron Garcia: Percussionist/ Vocals

OK Roots Music Presents Bill Frisell Trio

OK Roots' Music is kicking off its 6th annual Wine and Jazz Fete celebration with a special show by the Bill Frisell Trio on Thursday, June 6.

Jazz icon Bill Frisell’s four-decade career as a guitarist and composer has been cited by Downbeat as “the best recorded output of the decade.” “Frisell has had a lot of practice putting high concept into a humble package,” writes the New York Times. “Long hailed as one of the most distinctive and original improvising guitarists of our time, he has also earned a reputation for teasing out thematic connections with his music… There’s a reason that Jazz at Lincoln Center had him program a series called Roots of Americana.” Critics and peers have lauded Frisell as one of the music’s most treasured participants, praising his playing as well as the anatomy of his compositions — how he structures a form around often a simple melody or progression, creating a gesture at once complex and elemental.

Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists, Meet the Composer among others. In 2016, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors. Bill is also the subject of a new documentary film by director Emma Franz, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth.

His latest recording is Valentine (Blue Note), recorded with acclaimed bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston—the same trio that will play this year’s FETE. Valentine has been hailed as “a masterpiece” by Downbeat: “They consistently and strikingly play as one, voices intertwined, completing phrases as if sharing a single thought… Even overdubs are so perfect that everything feels utterly organic… the performances represent jazz playing at its most sublime.”

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. | Show starts at 8:30 p.m.

OK Roots Music Presents Changui Majadero Dance Party

Join us for the final night of OK Roots’ 6th annual Wine and Jazz Fete on Saturday, June 8, featuring Changui Majadero.

Playing ferociously danceable Cuban roots music, Changüí Majadero is a blazing five-piece band that has honed a deeply informed and highly personal take on changüí, a surging Afro-Cuban musical tradition that took shape in the late 19th Century on the eastern side of the island around Guantanamo. It’s one of the foundational styles that gave birth to son, salsa and timba, and in the hands of Changüí Majadero the music feels as fresh and intoxicating as a stiff shot of rum. Founded by guitarist/vocalist Gabriel García, an expert on Cuban tres guitar, the band mixes Cuba’s rural countryside music with L.A. grit for a deeply intoxicating, hip-shaking experience.

“Hypnotically repetitive and gloriously syncopated, Changüí Majadero is captivating and liberating.” —Pop Matters

Before the show, sample 4 south-of-the-border sustainably produced fine wines. Sommelier extraordinaire Sarah Effinger, of Provisions Fine Beverage Purveyors, will take you through each wine. Your ticket includes entry to the Changui Majadero concert immediately following the wine tasting. As a wine tasting participant, you get in before the general public & can choose your seat.
